St. Lucia

St.Lucia

They call it “The Garden Isle,” but they were being modest. “Garden of Eden” would be more accurate. Kauai is a natural miracle: mountains that look like a primordial world (Jurassic Park was shot here), a canyon more beautiful than the Grand Canyon, a tropical rainforest, waterfalls, luscious rivers…are we forgetting anything? Oh yeah, more than 50 miles of white sand beaches.

WHO

Ben Stiller and wife own here, and they just hosted Tom Cruise, Jack Black, and Robert Downey Jr. (Sure they made a movie, but some people will use any excuse to get here.) Hollywood A-listers Gwyneth, J.Lo, Harrison and Calista also say aloha to Kauai.

FUN

Hike. If you can handle rugged, the Kalalau trail on the Napali coast is simply an epic journey with magnificent waterfalls and astounding views. Visit the Waimea Canyon early in the day but get back down to gorgeous Polihale beach by 4 for magic light and sunset. Surf Hideaways beach with the locals or take a lesson with Laird Hamilton’s favorite crew. Windsurf at reef protected Anini Beach. Take a boat tour and see the whales in the winter and the dolphins all year long. Kayak up a forest river to a waterfall. Shop in quaint Koloa (we love the homemade goodies at Soap and Candle Works) and at nearby Poipu Village. Or experience the beauty of the island from above by helicopter (Air Kauai has a perfect safety record.)

SCOOP

Go North. The landscape, the mountains, the beaches, the beauty, the hippies—it’s all on the North Side. So get up there and just chill. Grateful to your hosts? Don’t forget to say mahalo. Hotels are a bit old school—consider renting a condo or even a house. With so many choices resist the temptation of doing too much.

LIVE

ULTRA: Na Pali Properties: Homes right on the water. High end to reasonable.
Hawaiian Beach Rentals: Condos all over the island, even even in some of the best hotels.
LUXE: Princeville: On serene Hanalei Bay, the best spot on the island.
Grand Hyatt Kauai: Every luxury and amenity.
MODERATE: Hanalei Colony: Relaxed, unassuming, wonderful location with spa.
Hanalei Bay Resort: Next to Princeville, half the price.
BUDGET: Pono Kai Resort: A condo hotel, excellent service. Hotel Coral Reef: On lovely beach. Near central Kapaa.

DINE

North side: Bali Hai, surrounded by lush gardens, may be one of the most romantic spots on the island. Café Hanalei at Princeville is stunning. For more casual fare, Hanalei Dolphin in town features great fish, with a take-out market in the back (love the sushi rolls.)
Central: The famed Blossoming Lotus proves that vegan can be yummy. Breakfast joint Eggbert's has the best banana pancakes in the state. The wraps at Mermaids are so good they may just keep you out of all the expensive restaurants.
South Side: Oceanside, secluded Beach House may offer the single best meal on the island while the torch-lit open air Keoki’s is touristy but fun.
