Bora Bora

Swimming with the fishes...bad in the parlance of The Sopranos...wonderful for everyone else. Bora Bora is simply a dream: lush dramatic mountains surrounded by impossibly blue waters. Undeveloped, uncrowded, of the most romantic spots on the planet. There’s no better place to honeymoon or just feel like you’re on a honeymoon. Swim, hike, sun, star in your own version of Blue Lagoon. Doesn’t matter-you’re in paradise.

A fave for celeb couples, and who can blame them? Tom and Katie. Tony and Eva. Charlize and someone very lucky. Nicole and Keith honeymooned here.

You have only one decision: IN or OUT? (of the water).
IN: Snorkel, scuba, kayak, surf, feed the sharks, sail a catamaran. or spend a romantic afternoon and bbq on your own private motu. OUT: Hike the astounding peaks, shop for black pearls, drive the 20 mile island road, unwind at Thalasso Spa at the Intercontinental or explore the Turtle Sanctuary at Le Meridien.

Ia Orana (yo-rah-nah) is “hello” in Tahitian—and you’ll hear it often from your very friendly hosts. There is no real rainy season, as the weather is consistently around 85°F/29°C throughout the year. The rays and sharks here are plentiful, but they are completely safe. A car could be fun to explore for one day, but is otherwise completely unnecessary.

Ultra-Luxe: Bora Bora Pearl. Lovely spot, great style, a dream resort.
St. Regis. The celebrity favorite, indulgent in every way.
Hotel Bora Bora. A gorgeous Aman resort, on the main island’s best beach.
Intercontinental Thalasso. Beautiful resort, world-class spa.
Moderate: Hotel Mai Tai. Next to island’s best beach, an incredible value.
Budget: Village Temanuata. Secluded bungalows, great price.

L'Appetisserie is perfect for a casual breakfast and lunch. Bloody Mary is a kitschy tourist-trap but fun for one night. Top Dive usually has special guests: manta rays showing off with abandon just below the tables. The hotel restaurants are generally strong, if overly expensive. For serious foodies, world famous La Villa Mahana was previously the sole standout on the island but now has some serious competition in Jean-Georges’ beautiful Lagoon at the St. Regis. But the most romantic table on the island is Matira Terrace at Hotel Bora Bora.

Heaven was supposed to be hard to get to…With daily nonstops from LA on Air Tahiti Nui, Tahiti is only three hours further away than Hawaii and Bora Bora is a short hop from there.
